Dial-Up Networking under the Windows® 95 Operating System

Section 5 - Troubleshooting

This section covers some common problems people encounter and how to fix them. Obviously, some things will come up that are either beyond the scope of this article or simply have not been thought of.

5.1 Missing Items in Network Control Panel

The only required items for dial-up networking to function are Client for Microsoft Networks, Dial-Up Adapter, and TCP/IP. The following instructions detail how to install each of these items.

5.1.1 Missing Client for Microsoft Networks

To add the missing Client for Microsoft Networks line into the network control panel, click on Add, shown in Figure 5.1.

The window in Figure 5.2 will open. In this window, highlight Client and click on Add.

This will bring up the window in Figure 5.3. Under Manufacturers: highlight Microsoft and under Network Clients: highlight Client for Microsoft Networks. Click on OK. Windows 95 will ask for the CD if necessary.

5.1.2 Missing Dial-Up Adapter

To add the missing Dial-Up Adapter line into the network control panel, click on Add, shown in Figure 5.1.

The window in Figure 5.2 will open. In this window, highlight Adapter and click on Add.

This will bring up the window in Figure 5.4. Under Manufacturers: highlight Microsoft and under Network Adapters: highlight Dial-Up Adapter. Click on OK. Windows 95 will ask for the CD if necessary.

5.1.3 Missing TCP/IP

To add the missing TCP/IP line into the network control panel, click on Add, shown in Figure 5.1.

The window in Figure 5.2 will open. In this window, highlight Protocol and click on Add.

This will bring up the window in Figure 5.5. Under Manufacturers: highlight Microsoft and under Network Protocols: highlight TCP/IP. Click on OK. Windows 95 will ask for the CD if necessary.
